Championship Gets Underway This Weekend

Eoghan Rua V Slaughtneil.

The football championships will take centre stage in the county this weekend as the first rounds of both the Senior and Intermediate grades get under way.

Our senior team get their campaign under way on Sunday evening in Glen in a very attractive double header. Eoghan Rua will feature against Slaughtneil in the first game at 5.30pm while Glenullin take on Loup at 7.15.

Eoghan Rua and Slaughtneil have met twice before in the championship in the short period since the Coleraine club entered the senior ranks in 2008. The Eoghan Rua men have held the upper hand in those meetings winning two, the second after a replay, in their historic run to the title in 2010. Since then however Slaughtneil have won all encounters with Coleraine in their league meetings.

The champions, Ballinderry should be too strong for Greenlough while Steelstown will be looking forward to their first foray in the senior ranks against Ballinascreen. Magherafelt have had a great season and top the league table, they are taken to see off Banagher. Multi county champions Bellaghy will be too strong for struggling Craigbane. Bottom of the table Glen could give Dungiven a game but their form suggests they will come up short. Lavey and Kilrea could be close but last year’s beaten finalists Kilrea are taken to sneak through. In what could prove to be the tie of the round Glenullin and Loup meet in the last of the eight senior championship games on Sunday evening. Loup are a very well organised side and are very difficult to break down as Eoghan Rua found to their cost at the quarter final stage last year. Glenullin will however go into the game in good shape as all their key players, the Bradley brothers, Paddy and Eoin, along with Gerard O’Kane are fully fit. Glenullin’s better scoring power is taken to edge what could be a tough encounter.
