Steelstown v Eoghan Rua

Eoghan Rua U-16s Suffer First Defeat

Last Thursday Eoghan Rua travelled to Steelstown and played in atrocious conditions, with persistent rain throughout the match, on a sodden pitch. In a very nervous Eoghan Rua first half the home team settled well and using their small speedy inside forward line caused havoc. There was a lot of aimless kicking from defense and the supply to the Eoghan Rua forward line was not of great quality. However they did manage to pilfer a goal through Hal McGonigle and this edged them ahead at half time. Points from Jack O’Doherty and Paddy Mullan (2) and Hal McGonigle gave a slim advantage of 1-4 to 0-6. James Breslin was unlucky when his strike rebounded off the cross bar and Paddy Mullan and Hal McGonigle were unfortunate when only timely tackles denied them goal scoring opportunities.

In the second half Connor Boyle moved to full back and this added to a more solid looking defense. However the luck continued to desert Eoghan Rua in front of goal with a Hal McGonigle shot coming back off the bar. Jack O’Doherty did get a shot away which was parried by the keeper and in an ensuing scramble on the goal line Barry Daly managed to poke the ball into the net. Shea Eastwood entered the fray and added a point which was the last score for Coleraine.

With time running out Steelstown were able to capitalise on a number of Coleraine errors and squeezed ahead by two points. Despite their best efforts the elusive scores did not come for Eoghan Rua and they suffered their first defeat of the campaign. Best for Coleraine were Connor Boyle and James Maguire in defense while Hal McGonigle and Paddy Mullan showed well in attack.

While everyone was bitterly disappointed with the result the outcome of the league is still very much in our own hands. We look forward to the next game with Loup after the break for exams.
