U16 Football – Newbridge v ER – 13 Jun 2013

Newbridge 5-8  v Eoghan Rua 0-3

13th June 2013

This match was played on a sticky pitch which had endured a couple of day’s rain. The home team settled well and encamped in the Eoghan Rua half for the first ten minutes although they could not put a score on the board due to some poor finishing.

With their first attach Paddy Mullan converted a free for an unlikely lead. However the efficiency of the Newbridge team began to tell and by half time had a 1-3 to 0-2 lead. Paddy Mullan adding the second Eoghan Rua scores.

The second half continued as the first half with sustained pressure from Newbridge and gradually they took control of proceedings running out 5-8 to 0-3 winners. Hal McGonigle added the only score of the half for the Coleraine side.

The lads were disappointed with their individual and collective performance. They seemed totally flat after an exhausting period of exams and perhaps this coloured the performance and the outcome. However they know that they are better than what the score reflects.

This is to take nothing away from the Newbridge side that had willing runners off the ball all over the pitch. They also tackled in packs and gave nothing for the Coleraine side to feed on with regards breaking ball or misplaced passes. They were a well oiled machine which proved effective and totally efficient.

Something suggests though that these teams might meet again before the end of the year in the championship. Lessons will be taken on board and personal performances will be greatly improved and there is little doubt that a cracker of a game will be on the cards.

With such a resounding defeat it is hard to pick out any performances. However Cillian Butler in goals must get a mention. While five goals were conceded, Cillian made some brilliant saves throughout the match. His solid performances have been a feature of consistency all year. Also in defense Connor Boyle and Nial Brown fought relentlessly throughout against continuous pressure from Newbridge.
